The HIAF Rough Guide To: Micro-D&B

01. Eight Miles High – “Flow Chart” (Klang; 1996)
02. Tundra – “Sprouts (Omni Trio Remix)” (Offshore; 2005)
03. Ezekiel Honig – “Love Session (Graphic DnB Remix)” (Microcosm; 2004)
04. Sileni – “Twitchy Droid Leg” (Offshore; 2004)
05. Squarepusher – “Venus No. 17” (Warp; 2004)
06. Hidden Agenda – “Fish Eggs” (Reinforced; 1998)
07. Something Else – “Ploosh (Morgan Packard Remix)” (Microcosm; 2004)
08. Actual Proof – “Maybe We’ll Stay (Sileni Remix)” (Offshore; 2004)

Number one is, yes, that Eight Miles High, and the tune that kicked all this off for me. Number two has flickers of keyboard streaking by like cars from a hilltop, a fitting end to the Omni Trio name (if nothing like the stuff everyone reveres him for). Number three is Pantytec remxing “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” with added tape speed issues. Number four everyone knows by now (right?), alternate title: “Spastic Crunk Leg.” Number five is surprisingly focused, suprisingly rolling. Number six I have no idea where you’d play this, then or now (still weirdest d&b tune I have ever heard). Number seven spooks-out on an analogue tip. Number eight sounds squishy, reversed, alive (and vaguely like the Tunda Klap riddim), proof that there’s still life in the old two-step pattern with a textural palette expansion. If anyone knows of anything else in this vein, plz add to comments box as it will be greatly appreciated.

i like "twerkstep" but nobody will ever use that

graphic - type a - warm communications
oS - 808 (omni trio farewell mix) - cymbalism
semtex - waywards - think
pieter k - watch dis - breakbeat science
anemone & clever - connect four - offshore

actually "twerkstep" is much better than "micro-dnb" which is totally lame.

a whole mix in the style of that graphic remix would be my favorite thing in the world at the moment.

This has really sparked my interest in this sound. I would love to hear a mix of it. Thanks for the note!

Polar's 'Out of Range' & 'Sit Down & Dance' (Breakeat Science 009) are kinda micro, although the former is similar to yer usual 'intelligent' d&b (good beat & dub tech synths tho) & the latter isn't really d&b at all, more like sub-Junior Boys or something, but from 2002. btw thanks for alerting me to Love Session Jess, it's amazing!

Is that a friendly challenge, Kuma? You and Eve vs. me and Ripley? :)

Anything by Pieter K. Again, ANYTHING by Pieter K. He so often gets left out of lists like this because he's reclusive and in LA and no on Subvert Central every day, and just generally an outsider. His overall output to his good out is nearly 1:1. I can't say that about anyone else in this little scene, even though there's no end of artists putting out great tunes.

Oh, and MACC - Drumpaper (or Gutteral, whichever one was his on that splitt). That tune is the bomb. I hope we hear more from him.

Jess you're really on a tear about the DnB these days... I feel like I've fallen off...

what's amazing is that, like grime or reggaeton or dancehall for others, i spend so much time following this stuff and there's still people who know 100x more than i do.

I'd recommend Return to Forever by Nucleus (on the Reinforced Records compilation Enforcers: Deadly Chambers of Sound from about 1999/2000) - its quite drummy, you don't get much micro-style processing on the beats but its all about the glitchy weird atmospherics and the relentless minimalism of the tune. In fact its probably the greatest creatively minimal dnb record of all time.

yeah Return to Forever is great and Nucleus - Flim Flam too. both are very minimalistic (but not micro).

There are more tunes mentioned in this thread:
